Very sweet & grapey, almost cognac-like, definitely packs a punch & a very full body as expected from a 61% dram

Finish

A very interesting Port Ellen as the color would not make me think that it would be any sweet; the first Port Ellen where I sense zero sea-saltiness and instead the BBQ dried meats meatiness is very impressive

Nose

Mesmerizing meaty smoky nose

Body

Very peaty smoky body, slightly sweet & hot but the smokiness is overwhelming, like an open campfire BBQ, salty, the meatiest PE I’ve ever drank, almost zero sea-saltiness

Finish

Long smoky finish, the smokiness lingers accompanied by a slight sweetness

A 26yo sherried secret Clynelish

Nose

Typical sherried & slightly smoky nose

Body

Body is much more tame than the 59,8% ABV suggests, definitely sweet - heavy cask influence, I don’t think sherry & Clynelish is a good mix as the sherry overwhelms the Clynelish profile, taste young (prob would blind guess in the 20yo range)

Finish

Long sweet finish

Nose

Old sherry nose, dried fruits, raisins, plums, sweet

Body

Taste exactly like the nose, super sweet & dried fruits, 70s old sherry whisky style like 1972 Tobermory or old Longmorn/Glendronachs but without the oaky bitterness

Finish

Long dry finish with a hint of floral fruitiness at the end

Nose

On the nose its more fruity and sweet than peaty & smoky, which is somewhat expected from the color, a very light elegant coastal smoke

Body

Honey, caramel, slightly meaty, full bodied, waxy & coating, definitely more punchy than the 46% ABV would suggest With water the sweetness becomes more pronounced, the smokiness only appears toward the end

Finish

Long, slightly bitter finish

Nose

Beautiful nose, an almost perfect balance between peat smoke & sherry, does not get overwhelmingly peaty or sweet, sea smoke, salty

Body

A very good 8yo whisky, definitely the best 8yo Islay whisky I have ever drank, very smoky but not in an overwhelming way but more like lingering in your mouth and leaving a lasting impression, with a hint of caramel honey sweetness

Finish

Long finish with zero bitterness or oakiness

A suprisingly good 19yo Ben Nevis from 1996

Nose

Excellent nose, mixture of floral, fruitiness and sweet, honey

Body

Caramel, sweet, honey, but also slightly bitter, not as floral of fruity as the nose suggest, perhaps the oak, creamy, very full body

Finish

Long oaky finish, the bitterness lingers but there’s a slight sweetness that makes it more enjoyable

Good warmup dram but nothing too spectacular despite being a relatively old whisky from the 1980s

Nose

Sweet summer fruits, honey, caramel

Body

Very full and rich body for a 43% dram, does not taste young at all, gets slightly hot & spicy towards the end, sweet & typical old sherry profile

Finish

Long, slightly dry finish, the spiciness becomes more gentle and mixes well with the sweetness

Slightly sweet and bitter/tannic towards the end, a very cask-influenced whisky that manages to mask the youngness of the whisky well but at the same time, you can’t really tell / distinguish the notes of the actual whisky

After drinking quite alot of Caol Ilas, I have came to the conclusion that while it’s definitely most likely to be worthwhile of your money, offering good-value and decent Islay whiskies, it’s quite hard to find an excellent sherried Caol Ila, especially for a good price (although the same issue applies to basically every Islay distillery). This was not an old vintage whisky by any means, but it was a better than expected Caol Ila, at a respectable 30+ years of age, available at decent prices, and it had a good balanced mixture of peat & sherry

Nose

Beautfiul fruity nose, a bit spicy

Body

Meaty BBQ peaty, typical Caol Ila but also mixed with sherry sweetness, oily, creamy, dark fruits, tobacco, spices

Finish

Long warm finish, honeys, caramel

This is an excellent value for money Ledaig, bottled at a very respectable ABV of 65,5% but does not taste overwhelming at all

Nose

Very peaty, salty, seasmoke, gets meatier & slightly hot overtime, hints of ash & coal

Body

The youthfulness kicks in as it gets spicy & quite hot, definitely very smoky & slightly sweet

Finish

The finish is slightly dry & slightly bitter, definitely weaker than the nose & body

A better Banff but still not that great

Nose

Sweet, dried fruits, but a hint of spicyness & less intense nose despite having a higher ABV, slightly creamy, perhaps bananas

Body

Still bitter but not as oaky, more complex notes than the 40%, definitely old sherry notes, not sweet at all

Finish

Still a medium dry finish, not spicy but more bitter, perhaps a stronger cask influence & more time spent in oak

Not often you see a pair of Banff that could be paired and compare like these ones, same vintage & a similar ABV + age, even from the same bottling series! A subpar Banff

Bitter & oaky
