The Amber Room ledger

Surprisingly enjoyable & easy to drink despite the high ABV and young age

A good Port Ellen with a lot of oomph but hampered by the overwhelming spiciness but it’s understandable considering the age of this dram; acceptable quality given the quite affordable price (for a Port Ellen) of 50 SGD for a 20ml dram. The “Cask” series from Gordon & Macphail is often a hit or miss so it’s surprising to see a dram sitting in the middle

How can I resist a 1970s Port Ellen, especially when it was bottled on my birth year 2000! At just 50 SGD for a 2cl pour, it’s irresistible

From one of the last barrels of Port Ellen. An above average Port Ellen with a gentle, balanced peatiness but it feels closer to a Caol Ila than a typical Port Ellen

A very solid cask strength Port Ellen from 1978

A very well-balanced Port Ellen with a fantastic nose

As a big fan of Port Ellen (prob my favorite distillery), I knew I just had to try this bottle after seeing it at Casky Hong Kong. Supposedly a 40+ years old Port Ellen, bottled in 2025 from one of the last casks distilled by Port Ellen back in 1983 but lacking the documentation to prove it, which explains its surprisingly good pricing. My first 40+ years old Port Ellen (and probably my last, at least for a while, due to the exorbitant price of the Official Bottling of the Port Ellen 40) and it certainly did not disappoint!

An average Port Ellen, at least compared to the other dozen or so PE that I have tasted, and probably the least smoky PE

Would not have guessed that this was a Port Ellen in a blind taste
